Great bees, that have surpassed my expectations.

Last year, because I had a colony that were getting to be a problem, ( rather aggressive ) I purchased two new queen bees from another supplier and I split and re-queened them. The cost was over £100, and they both failed.
Luckily I spotted over wintered 6 frame Nuk's for sale at The Hive Guys, I ordered one early this year, which arrived end of April.
I re-housed them and released the queen ( which was caged for transport ) and let them fly out.
These bees are brilliant, the queen is filling the drawn comb with new brood
and the workers are working well ( without aggression ). It is a pleasure doing my hive inspections.
I did however make one mistake, all of my bees are on 14 x 12 National deep foundation so I now have burr comb extending down from the standard frames that the bees came on which I will have to sort outing the future.
I am confident that I will be ordering another over wintered colony next year, and to over come this problem I will make a box to fill the space under the six standard frames such that the bees will not be able to extend burr comb down, and have the rest of the deep frames each side, this will make my inspections much easier.

Questions & Answers

What is a bee nuc?

A bee nuc (short for nucleus colony) is a small, starter beehive. It typically contains 6 frames of bees which includes brood (bee eggs) worker bees and a singular queen. It's a great way to start beekeeping.

How many bees in a Nuc?

There's around 20,000 bees in a nucleus colony.

How does my Nuc arrive?

If you purchase bees from us your nuc will arrive in a correx nuc box. This is a special box designed for shipping of bees. We transfer the bee hive from one of our poly hives into this on the day of transport. These will be shipped with Royal Mail Special Delivery Pre-1pm service. The outside will be marked with a label saying "Live Bees" must be delivered today.

What do I do when my honey bees arrive?

Open up the correx nuc from the top and lift out each frame in series. Tranferring all of the bees in the box into your permanent hive.

Can I start beekeeping with a nucleus colony?

With a nucleus colony you get everything needed to start a colony off and get into beekeeping as it includes both the worker bees and queen. From time to time, we get asked if you can start a colony with just a queen bee, unfortunately, you can't. This is as there aren't any worker bees provided with our queen bees to start a colony off.

What is a Buckfast bee?

Buckfast is a breed of bee. They were selectively bred by Brother Adam at Buckfast Abby in England in the 1900s. They have become the industry standard in beekeeping for their calm nature, disease resistance, and a great honey crop. They are now the most popular bees for sale in the UK.

How do I purchase a bee colony from us?

Buying bees from us is easy. Place an order with us online and we'll deliver it to you on the week you have selected.

Are these bees overwintered?

Yes, the bee hives that are for sale in April are overwintered. Nucs available in june are created with the current years' queen.
