Granulated Sugar for Bee Feed 25kg

Make your own syrup and save

A 25kg bag of white granulated sugar, sold as bee feed for honey bees. Making your own syrup works out cheaper than buying it ready-made. Mix it with warm water for autumn stores or spring build-up.

Why choose me?

  • The right sugar for bees. White granulated sugar only. Brown or raw sugars can give bees dysentery.
  • Cheaper than ready-made syrup. Mix it yourself and save.
  • Buy in bulk. One 25kg bag means no running out halfway through autumn feeding.
  • Arrives boxed. We ship the bag in a strong box.

How to make sugar syrup

  • Autumn (thick syrup, often called 2:1): 1kg sugar to 630ml warm water. Use this to top up winter stores.
  • Spring (thin syrup, often called 1:1): 1kg sugar to 1.26 litres warm water. Use this for spring build-up, or if stores run low.
  • Use warm water, but don't boil it. Stir until the syrup turns clear.
  • Feed in the evening and don't spill any, as this helps stop robbing.
  • Don't feed syrup in cold weather, because the bees can't process it. Use fondant instead.

How much syrup does one 25kg bag make?

  • Autumn (thick, 2:1): 25kg sugar + about 15.75 litres warm water makes about 31 litres of syrup.
  • Spring (thin, 1:1): 25kg sugar + about 31.5 litres warm water makes about 47 litres of syrup.
  • Sugar takes up space as it dissolves (about 0.63 litres per kg), so you end up with more syrup than water you added.
  • Making a smaller batch? 1kg of sugar makes about 1.26 litres of thick syrup or about 1.9 litres of thin syrup.
  • Let the syrup cool to lukewarm before you put it in the feeder.

Questions & Answers

What do 2:1 and 1:1 syrup mean? +

They're old imperial ratios. 2:1 was 2lb sugar to 1 pint of water, which works out at 1kg sugar to 630ml water in metric. This thick syrup is for autumn stores. 1:1 is 1kg sugar to about 1.26 litres water. This thin syrup is for spring.

Can I use brown sugar? +

No. Only use white granulated sugar. Brown or raw sugars can give bees dysentery.

When should I feed autumn syrup? +

Early autumn, after you've taken your honey off. The bees need warm weather to take the syrup down and store it. September is a good month in many parts of the UK.

Can I feed syrup in winter? +

No. When it's cold, bees can't process syrup. Use fondant instead.
