How to secure beehives in the winter UK

Taking beehives through the winter in the UK it's vitally important that you prevent them from blowing over. If your hive blows over this is a surefire way for them to freeze to death.

Secure the hive

  1. Add a brick or heavy object on the roof of the hive.
  2. Ratchet straps.

Choose a good hive stand:

It's very well securing a beehive to the stand, but you should also ensure that the stand will not blow over. This comes down to choosing an appropriate hive stand. The best hive stands are:

1. Low to the ground - no more than 1ft off the ground.
2. Have a large surface area to make them less likely to blow over.

It looks rather industrial but plastic pallets make the best hive stands if you can et your hands on them...

Why do plastic pallets make the best hive stands?

1. They can't rot.
2. You can easily strap the hive down through the eylets in the pallet.
3. Large surface area for standing up to four hives on.
4. Won't blow over.
